43rd Annual OCWA Golf Tournament
at Strawberry Farms Golf Club

The Best Yet at Strawberry Farms

By Michael J. Sinacori

The 43rd Annual OCWA Golf Tournament returned to Strawberry Farms Golf Course in full force this year. For the first time since the pandemic began, we were back at 100%, with no COVID restrictions.

Held as usual on the first Monday in June, this was my 29th year as Golf Committee Chair and the fifth time we’ve held the event at Strawberry Farms. And to reiterate what I said at the event, on behalf of the OCWA Board and the Golf Committee we wish to thank all the participants who continue to support this tournament. We’re proud that we sustained this event through the pandemic, and that we did it without a reduction in demand. In fact, attendance was up this year with 120 players signed on to the event.

Surprisingly, even with the increased number of players, the round still played in less than five hours (a long-standing Golf Committee goal). We’ve already secured our day for next year: June 5, 2023. Mark your calendars now as we have already submitted our deposit!

Now, on to the fun stuff: The awards ceremony began at about 2:30, in the Big Red Barn next to the Clubhouse. Spring roll appetizers greeted players coming off the course, followed shortly thereafter by a fiesta taco plate buffet. Boy was it good (even ice cold when I ate it after the event). The two Las Vegas holes this year, along with the putting contest, gave everyone a chance to win some of the $6,000 worth of prizes. We gave away rounds of golf, numerous individual clubs, and a complete combo set of irons. Not to mention all the other great opportunity prizes! Each par 3 had a closest to the pin contest and there were two long drive contests.

Prizes were awarded to the top three low gross players and the top three in two separate flights for net players. Always fun as an engineer to show the statistics of the participants: We had an expected low score of 70 from the same player who shot 63 last year! The other two low gross players shot 75. There were only 7 other players who scored in the 70’s, and 26 players scored in the 80’s. The average score was right around 97, which is very typical for our event. The highest posted score was 123 out of the 160 maximum allowed. It was a wonderful day even though I played horrible as usual. Never easy organizing the event and then trying to hit a golf ball. Triple bogey for my first hole with two out of play. Really fun start (NOT). No matter what your index is, we always strive to do better than the last time and there is always that shot, or two, or ten that we want back. I want to go replay 1 and 12 and erase those two triple bogey holes.

I truly believe the OCWA Golf event is one of the most enjoyable in the industry. I know it is for me, though my score is always higher than it should be.

As noted, next year is booked for June 5th, 2023. Mark your calendars and sign up early!

A big part of the day’s success was due to the help provided by the many volunteers. We’re indebted to Jill Zander and Camilla Howe from Michael Baker International, Kyleigh Dingfelder from Leighton, and Chelsea Roy from PACE Advanced Water Engineering for their tireless assistance to ensure the event’s success. Special thanks to Allison Tomko, and the entire staff at Strawberry Farms Golf Club, for their generous hospitality and the extraordinary effort they provided to help make our Tournament such a resounding success.

A special thanks is owed as well to the Golf Committee Members. These unsung golf heroes make the event what it is. Please give any one of the committee members a call if you have suggestions on how to make this event even better next year.

The OCWA Board and Golf Committee would like to thank all of the 41 Sponsors that made the event possible. Without their contribution, the fiesta awards ceremony and prizes would not be possible. All our Sponsors are listed here in the 2022 Golf Tournament Sponsorship tab. Please take a moment to look through the list. In addition, all of their addresses and phone numbers are in the OCWA Directory.

And with that, thanks for playing and see you next year!
